Application Details
♦ Suitable Products
Calcined petroleum coke is a core carbon raw material in the electrolytic aluminum industry. Its high carbon, low ash, and low sulfur characteristics make it suitable for the preparation of carbon products throughout the entire electrolytic aluminum production process.
♦ Application Scenarios
Calcined petroleum coke is used as a raw material in the production of cathode carbon blocks and prebaked anodes for aluminum electrolytic cells, enhancing their conductivity and high-temperature resistance.
The construction and maintenance of aluminum electrolytic cells require specialized carbon additives; calcined petroleum coke can be used as a raw material to prepare ramming mixes and fillers.
Common specifications for this application:
► Fixed carbon ≥98% ► Sulfur ≤0.7%
► Powder resistivity ≤500 μΩ・m ► Ash ≤0.4%
1. Preparation of prebaked anode carbon blocks for electrolytic aluminum (the most crucial and largest application)
Prebaked anodes are consumable anodes in aluminum electrolysis cells, and calcined petroleum coke is their main raw material, accounting for 70% to 80% of the raw material ratio.
Kneading
Molding
Calcination
•Production Process
Calcined petroleum coke + pitch coke + coal tar pitch (binder) → kneading → molding → calcination → prebaked anode carbon blocks.
•Core Function
Provides the carbon source required for the electrolytic reaction, while possessing good conductivity, high-temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance to support the electrochemical reaction of alumina decomposition within the electrolytic cell.
•Performance Requirements
Low-sulfur (S≤0.5%) and low-ash (ash≤0.3%) calcined petroleum coke must be selected to avoid impurities affecting electrolysis efficiency and aluminum liquid purity.
2. Auxiliary raw materials for preparing electrolytic aluminum cathode carbon blocks
The cathode carbon block is the inert electrode lining the aluminum electrolytic cell.
The main raw materials are high-quality anthracite and graphite fragments, and calcined petroleum coke can be added as an auxiliary ingredient.

•Application Scenarios
When producing semi-graphite or graphite cathode blocks, adding 5%~15% calcined petroleum coke improves the conductivity and structural density of the cathode blocks.
•Core Functions
Optimizes the resistivity of the cathode blocks, enhances resistance to sodium corrosion (sodium embeds into the cathode carbon lattice during electrolysis, causing volume expansion and cracking), and extends the service life of the electrolytic cell.
3. Carbon ramming mix and filler for preparing electrolytic aluminum
The construction and maintenance of aluminum electrolytic cells require specialized carbonaceous auxiliary materials. Calcined petroleum coke can be used as a raw material to prepare ramming mix and filler.

•Ramming Mix
Used for constructing the impermeable layer at the bottom and side walls of the electrolytic cell. Adding calcined petroleum coke improves the material's high-temperature resistance and conductivity, preventing aluminum melt leakage and electrolyte corrosion.
•Filler
Used to fill the gaps between prebaked anodes, enhancing the uniformity of current conduction in the electrolytic cell and reducing energy loss.
